Insider tips for attending and preparing for career fairs
If you’ve never attended a career fair, you may feel nervous about what to expect. Luckily, our TA team knows a thing or two about these career fairs — here are some helpful tips for navigating them:
1. Do your company research beforehand
A great way to be prepared for a career fair is to look at the companies attending and make a shortlist of the ones you know you want to connect with. Do your research and take notes about the companies — you can generate questions that you want to ask, too.
2. Arrive early
Arriving early helps you get yourself prepared to meet with the different companies at the career fair. You can get yourself in the right mindset and make sure you have everything organized and ready to go.
3. Dress professionally
First impressions have a big impact with companies — make sure you dress to impress! At a minimum, you should wear business casual attire — that means collared shirts or blouses and dress pants or skirts.
4. Polish your resume (and bring a lot of copies!)
A big part of these career fairs is giving your resume to the companies you’re interested in for future employment. That means you need to ensure you have enough copies to give to any companies of interest (it’s always better to have too many copies than not enough!)
But before you run to print 50 copies of your resume, make sure you revise and clean it up. Your college career center is a great resource to help you edit and add to your resume, so that, by the time it reaches us, you have a polished and professional resume that sets the right impression!
5. Be prepared to talk about you
Prospective employers want to get to know you, so be prepared to talk about yourself! Prepare a short elevator pitch about you and your accomplishments to share with any prospective employers. You want to make a memorable impression and sell yourself to them!
Expert insights from
Julie G.Talent Acqusition Coordinator at WebFX
“Be prepared to give a brief pitch about yourself! You’ll want to share your name, major, graduation year, and any relevant internships or projects you’ve done. You’ll also want to think about sharing what’s unique about you — what can you bring to the company if they hired you? You’ll really want to sell yourself as a unique candidate to prospective employers!”
6. Be courteous of others students
When you attend a career fair, there’s going to be a lot of other students in attendance, too. It’s important to be courteous of other students’ time — try not to spend too much time at one company’s booth if others are waiting to speak with a company representative.
Additionally, if you’re the one waiting to speak with a company representative, make sure you respect other students’ privacy if they’re already speaking with someone!
7. Take notes on companies while there
Even though you’re doing research on a company before visiting them at the career fair, you’ll likely learn a lot about them when talking with the representative (and get answers to your questions!) Be sure to jot down any notes after chatting with company representatives to remember later!
8. Follow up with companies
If you’re really interested in certain companies, be sure to follow up with them after the career fair to express your interest, and thank them for taking the time to chat with you. It sets a great impression with the company!
What does WebFX look for at these career fairs?
Every company looks for different things at career fairs, so there’s no magic formula that’s going to help you say the right thing at the right time. The most important thing is to share your experiences and the potential value you bring to a company.
At WebFX, we look for people who have an interest in the marketing industry, especially those about to graduate or post-grads looking for their first full-time career! Most of our positions are entry level, so we really look at soft skills. We look at things like your attitude and ability to put forth your best effort. We also like to gauge your level of interest in marketing work and passion for the field!
Our team really focuses on soft skills over hard skills for entry level positions — that’s because we can help build the hard skills you need to succeed in your position, but the soft skills are inherent!
